Hip pain physiotherapy in Brisbane

Hip pain can show up on the side of the hip, deep in the groin or in the buttock. It can make walking, stairs, sitting or lying on your side uncomfortable. At our Milton and Mansfield clinics we work out where your pain is coming from, then combine Winback TECAR with a progressive strength program.

Pain on the side of the hip

After hip surgery

How we assess your hip

  • Where it hurts. Side of the hip, groin and buttock pain usually have different causes.
  • Movement and strength. Hip range of motion and the strength of your gluteal and thigh muscles.
  • Lower back check. We screen your back, because hip-area pain can come from the spine.
  • Referral if needed. We refer for imaging or to your GP when the assessment suggests it.

How treatment works at BTS

  • Winback TECAR, if suitable. Used to create warmth in the muscles and tendons around the hip so exercise is more comfortable. How TECAR works.
  • Progressive strengthening. Gluteal, hip and thigh strength, built up step by step.
  • Daily-life changes. Advice on sleeping position, sitting, stairs and walking load while the hip settles.
  • Clinical Pilates. Controlled hip and core work on the reformer, in groups of no more than four. About Clinical Pilates.
  • Combined care. Remedial massage or acupuncture can be added to the same plan if appropriate.

What you can do now

  • If side-lying hurts, place a pillow between your knees at night.
  • Avoid crossing your legs or standing with your weight on one hip.
  • Keep walking, but shorten the distance if it flares your pain.
  • Avoid deep, low chairs for now if they are painful to get out of.

When to see a doctor urgently

  • You cannot put weight on the leg after a fall, especially if you are older
  • A hot, swollen, very painful hip with fever or feeling unwell
  • A child or teenager with a new limp, hip or knee pain, particularly with fever
  • Calf pain, swelling or redness after hip surgery

In an emergency, call 000.
