How we assess your neck and shoulder

  • Your work and daily routine. Desk set-up, screen time, sleep position and sport.
  • Movement testing. Neck and shoulder range, strength and control through the shoulder blade.
  • Nerve checks. If you have arm pain, pins and needles or weakness.
  • Safety screening. We refer you to your GP if anything needs medical review.

How treatment works at BTS

  • Winback TECAR, if suitable. Warmth within the neck and shoulder muscles to ease tension before exercise.
  • Targeted strengthening. Shoulder blade, rotator cuff and deep neck muscle exercise, progressed over time.
  • Desk and sleep advice. Simple changes to your workstation, breaks and pillow set-up.
  • Clinical Pilates. Upper body and postural work in small groups. About Clinical Pilates.
  • Combined care. Acupuncture or remedial massage can be added if appropriate.

What you can do now

  • Take a short movement break every 30 to 45 minutes at your desk.
  • Bring your screen to eye height and keep your keyboard close.
  • Keep the neck moving gently within a comfortable range.
  • Use heat for comfort if it helps.

When to see a doctor urgently

Call 000 or go to an emergency department if neck pain comes with:

  • Dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing
  • A sudden, severe headache unlike any you have had before
  • Weakness or numbness spreading in the arms or legs
  • Neck pain after a significant fall or accident

Chest or left arm pain with shortness of breath also needs urgent medical care.

Neck and shoulder pain questions

Can a physio help with headaches?

If your headaches are linked to your neck, physiotherapy may help as part of your care. Your physiotherapist will check whether your neck is involved and refer you to your GP if the headaches need medical review.

Should I rest a painful shoulder?

Short-term changes to aggravating activities can help, but complete rest usually leads to more stiffness. Your physio will show you which movements to keep doing.

Can you help with neck pain after a car accident?

Yes. We accept CTP claims. Bring your claim number to your first appointment.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly. A GP referral is only needed if you are using a Medicare care plan.
