Knee problems we commonly see
Pain around the kneecap
Also called patellofemoral pain or runner's knee. Often worse on stairs, squatting or after sitting.
Knee osteoarthritis
Stiffness and aching in the knee joint. Exercise is a core part of managing it.
Ligament sprains
MCL and ACL injuries from twisting, landing or contact sport.
Meniscus irritation
Pain on twisting or deep bending, sometimes with catching or swelling.
Tendon pain
Pain just below the kneecap with jumping, running or stairs.
Outer knee pain in runners
Pain on the outside of the knee that builds during longer runs.
How we assess your knee
- How it started. A specific injury, a change in training, or a gradual build-up.
- Knee tests. Swelling, movement, ligament and meniscus tests.
- Hips and feet. How the rest of your leg controls the knee during squats, steps and hops.
- Referral if needed. We refer for imaging or to a GP or surgeon when the assessment suggests it.
How treatment works at BTS
- Winback TECAR, if suitable. The resistive mode can reach denser tissue such as tendons and ligaments around the knee. How TECAR works.
- Progressive strength work. Quadriceps, hip and calf strength, built up step by step.
- Load planning. How much running, stairs and sport to do while the knee settles.
- Clinical Pilates. Controlled leg work on the reformer in small groups.
- After surgery. See our post-surgery rehab page for ACL and knee replacement rehab.
What you can do now
- Keep moving within a comfortable range rather than resting completely.
- Reduce the activity that flares it, such as hills, stairs or long runs, for a short time.
- Use ice or heat for comfort, whichever feels better.
When to see a doctor urgently
- A hot, red, swollen knee with fever
- You cannot put weight on the leg after an injury
- The knee is locked and will not straighten
- Calf pain, swelling or redness, especially after surgery or a long flight
