Lower back pain physiotherapy in Brisbane

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a physiotherapist. At our Milton and Mansfield clinics we start with a thorough assessment, then combine Winback TECAR, guided exercise and Clinical Pilates into one plan you can follow at home.

  • No referral needed
  • From $119 initial

Common types of lower back pain we see

In many people no single damaged structure can be found on assessment or scans. This is called non-specific low back pain, and many episodes settle within a few weeks with the right advice and activity. Other presentations need a more specific plan.

Muscle and joint strain

Pain after lifting, gardening, a long drive or an unusual load, often with muscle guarding and stiffness.

Stiffness from sitting

Aching that builds through a working day at a desk and eases when you move.

Disc-related and leg pain

Back pain that travels into the buttock or leg, sometimes called sciatica, with or without pins and needles.

Recurring back pain

Pain that keeps returning, often linked to reduced strength, fitness or confidence to move.

How we assess your back

  • Your story. When it started, what makes it better or worse, your work, sport and goals.
  • Movement and strength. How your back, hips and legs move and where strength or control is limited.
  • Nerve checks. If you have leg symptoms, we test sensation, reflexes and strength.
  • Safety screening. We check for signs that need a GP review or imaging, and refer you if needed.

How treatment works at BTS

  • Winback TECAR, if suitable. Used to create warmth in the tissues and ease muscle tension, so exercise is more comfortable. How TECAR works.
  • Guided exercise. A graded program to restore movement, strength and confidence.
  • Clinical Pilates. Reformer-based exercise in groups of no more than four, progressed by your physio. About Clinical Pilates.
  • Work and home advice. Practical changes to sitting, lifting and daily routines.
  • Combined care. Acupuncture or remedial massage can be added to the same plan if appropriate.

What you can do now

  • Stay gently active. Short walks are usually better than long periods of bed rest.
  • Change positions often if you sit for work.
  • Use heat for comfort if it helps.
  • Ask your pharmacist or GP about pain relief that is right for you.

When to see a doctor urgently

See a GP or go to an emergency department straight away if back pain comes with any of the following:

  • Numbness around the groin or buttocks, or new problems controlling your bladder or bowel
  • Leg weakness that is getting worse
  • Fever, feeling very unwell or unexplained weight loss
  • Pain after a significant fall or accident, or a history of cancer

In an emergency, call 000.

Lower back pain questions

Do I need an X-ray or MRI for back pain?

Usually not. Scans are generally only needed when there are warning signs or symptoms that are not improving as expected. Your physiotherapist will tell you if a GP review or imaging is recommended.

How many physio sessions will I need for lower back pain?

It depends on how long you have had pain, how it affects you and your goals. After your first assessment your physiotherapist will explain the plan and how often to come.

Is Clinical Pilates good for lower back pain?

Exercise is a recommended part of care for most people with ongoing low back pain, and Clinical Pilates is one supervised way to do it. Your physio decides whether it suits you and when to start.

Do I need a referral to see a physio for back pain?

No. You can book directly. A GP referral is only needed if you are using a Medicare care plan.

Can I claim back pain physiotherapy on my health fund?

Yes, if your extras cover includes physiotherapy. Both clinics have HICAPS, so eligible rebates are claimed on the spot.
